1. Kaweah Groundwater Subbasin Successfully Exits State Intervention
The State Water Board unanimously approved returning the Kaweah Groundwater Subbasin to Department of Water Resources (DWR) jurisdiction, marking the successful completion of the basin's time under State Water Board review and intervention under SGMA. The three Groundwater Sustainability Agencies (East Kaweah, Mid Kaweah, and Greater Kaweah GSAs) made significant improvements to their 2024 Groundwater Sustainability Plans, addressing most of the key deficiencies related to groundwater levels, land subsidence, water quality, and interconnected surface water, with one interconnected surface water deficiency partially resolved. This achievement demonstrates effective collaboration between state regulators, GSAs, and community stakeholders, setting a benchmark for how other basins can work through the intervention process.
