Unusually Dry Spring Means ~4.5-Month Irrigation Season Tzhrough July and Focus on Direct Deliveries March 2026 recorded zero precipitation across the southern Sierra — the first time in 104 years. April 1 snowpack water content is the second-lowest on record (only 2015 was worse). As a result, Fresno Irrigation District (FID) started irrigation mid-March to prevent reservoir spills, but now projects a season through July (~4.5 months vs. the typical 5). FID will prioritize direct deliveries to growers over recharge basin operations this year — keeping wells off is considered more effective than groundwater recharge under these conditions.
