1. Golden Mussel Treatment Program Authorized for District-Wide Application The board declared an emergency and authorized staff to move forward with a district-wide golden mussel treatment program, subject to final contract approval by the general manager and legal counsel. Golden mussels have been detected throughout the canal system, from as far south as the federal portion of the Buttleman Ridge Canal to as far north as the Compozo Canal system. The board approved a maintenance-rate application using the STI-62 product (the less expensive of two options), with treatment targeted to begin around October 1. Chemical will be dosed at Semi-Tropic 1 and Semi-Tropic 3 intake points, with booster sites at Southeast and North plants. Growers should be aware that treated water will flow through the system — those already running similar copper-based products may see dosage adjustments based on residual levels measured at the end of their lines. Dead mussel shells will need to be filtered out before entering drip systems. Staff will report back on costs and effectiveness at the October board meeting.
