Harvest Water Project Nearing Completion with Major Basin Benefits
The Sacramento Area Sewer District (SacSewer) presented a comprehensive update on the Harvest Water project, which will deliver up to 50,000 acre-feet per year of recycled water to over 16,000 acres of agricultural and habitat land. This is the largest agricultural recycled water project in California and a major management action in the South American Subbasin Groundwater Sustainability Plan. The project includes 32,500 AFY of in-lieu recharge, allowing farmers to use recycled water instead of pumping groundwater. Pipeline installation through Elk Grove is complete, with 56 on-farm connection assemblies currently under construction representing 68% of summer irrigation demand. Water delivery is anticipated in 2027, and the project is expected to significantly raise groundwater levels throughout the Harvest Water service area, with modeling showing levels rising to within 25 feet of ground surface across 90–100% of that area.
