New Water Diversion Projects Under Study to Address Seawater Intrusion Staff presented results from two major feasibility studies examining new surface water diversion projects. The Castroville and Eastside Canals study focuses on utilizing Monterey County Water Resources Agency's Permit 11043 to divert up to 400 cfs from the Salinas River during winter flows, though analysis shows practically usable volumes would be much lower, on the order of several thousand to roughly thirty thousand acre-feet annually depending on diversion structure size. All scenarios require significant storage infrastructure since water availability peaks in winter while demand peaks in summer. Both feasibility studies are planned to be completed by March 31st with cost estimates and groundwater modeling results, with staff returning to committees after that date.
