The spring 2026 crop survey shows irrigated acreage in the district has dropped to 109,571 acres, down from 135,397 acres in 2015 — a reduction of roughly 25,800 acres. This meets the district's fallowing target. General Manager Jason Gianquinto cautioned that acreage is only one metric; the district still needs to confirm that actual water demand on the remaining irrigated acres aligns with available supply, which won't be known until year-end. New crop survey categories now track abandoned orchards/vineyards (where owners walked away without removing trees or vines), and staff noted more row crops and even potatoes returning to the district for the first time in years.
