Groundwater Recharge Was a Major Focus of the Meeting — and Growers Are Central to Making It Work The Commission devoted a major portion of its meeting to groundwater recharge, hearing from three state agencies (DWR, State Water Resources Control Board, and CDFW) plus local practitioners from Tulare, Madera, Pajaro Valley, Orange County, and the Sacramento Valley. Over 500 recharge projects are identified in Groundwater Sustainability Plans statewide, representing 1.5 million acre-feet of additional annual water supply. In wet year 2023, managed aquifer recharge hit 4.9 million acre-feet statewide — but in drought years it can drop to roughly 200,000 acre-feet, underscoring the urgency of being "recharge ready" before storms arrive.
