Chemical treatment of golden mussels started district-wide the day before the March 10 meeting, with 79 totes of product deployed across 12 injection sites and 18 consultant staff managing dosing throughout the canal system. Alarmingly, settling plates installed just one month ago in a stand tank already revealed new juvenile mussels, meaning the invasive species appears to be actively spawning even in cold conditions — contradicting earlier assumptions. Staff said they anticipate deep-cleaning most or all stand tanks during the next winter maintenance window and will continue low-dose treatment year-round to target larvae over their three-year life cycle.
