1. Golden Mussel Infestation Discovered in Friant-Kern Canal
An invasive golden mussel infestation has been discovered in the Friant-Kern Canal, with DNA testing showing presence as far upstream as milepost 111 near White River. This is a serious concern as these mussels can cause costly damage to piped irrigation systems in local districts. Staff is coordinating with multiple agencies including California Department of Fish and Wildlife and Regional Water Board on control plans. Treatment options being explored include desiccation (drying facilities for 30 days), copper treatments, and UV systems, though these require special permits and CEQA compliance. The Authority will bring a comprehensive control and funding package to the Board in February for consideration, as this work was not anticipated in the current budget. Boat inspection stations at Millerton Lake are also being pursued to prevent further spread.
