Basin Conditions Show Improvement Despite Lower-Than-Exceptional Water Year
The 2025 Water Year showed continued progress toward sustainability goals. While storage decreased by 40,000 acre-feet compared to the very wet 2023-2024 period, this is still better than the historical average overdraft of 64,000 acre-feet. Most significantly, the critical Eastern Principal Aquifer (the main overdraft area) actually gained 5,000 acre-feet of storage, and groundwater levels have stabilized rather than continuing their historical decline. Wells in problem areas are now fluctuating around minimum thresholds rather than declining, with some wells even showing increases.
